BES ANNUAL MEETING
3 - 5 SEPTEMBER 2008
IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON, UK

BES STUDENT MEETING
2 SEPTEMBER 2008

The BES is repeating the format of the Student Session preceding the main Annual Meeting on Tuesday 2 September.  There will be parallel undergraduate and postgraduate sessions. All students wishing to attend the main meeting are welcome to come and will be charged an additional fee of £10 to cover lunch and registration.

Booking to attend the Student Session

If you would like to attend the Student meeting AND the main BES Annual Meeting, please use this link Annual Meeting online booking form and select the relevant tick box.

If youare an undergraduate and would ONLY like to attend the Student Meeting, please download this form and return it to the BES office.

The final deadline for bookings is Friday 1 August.

Oral presentations and posters

Students are invited to submit abstracts for posters and talks as an email attachment to the session coordinator Sarah Dalrymple.  Abstracts must be no more than 50 words long (longer abstracts will be rejected).  Please include the names and affiliations of you and your co-authors, and your year of study.  There are limited time slots for talks and poster spaces so presentations will be selected to reflect a broad range of subjects within ecology.  The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday 30 May 2007.  You will be contacted by the session coordinator to confirm that you have been successful.

Problem-solving speed presentations and break-out groups

We are trying out a new type of session this year consisting of five-minute talks given by students who are having particular problems or need specific advice on the research.  These might include overcoming experimental limitations or related to statistical analysis of your data.  The audience will be asked to consider if they have a particular interest in one of the talks and then will form break-out groups in order to try and get some answers based on others experiences and viewpoints.  If you think you might benefit from this problem-solving session please send a 50 word description of your problem to Sarah Dalrymple by Friday 25 July.

CV Clinic

If you are interested in receiving feedback on your CV from established ecologists send it as an attachment to Sarah Dalrymple .  State what sector you are interested in working in (e.g. research, NGOs, consultancy etc.) and I will try and match you to a relevant person on the panel.  You will receive written feedback on the day and all delegates will be able to participate in the CV and Careers Clinic.  Unfortunately only 20 CVs can be accepted so I will operate on a first come, first served basis. CVs must be submitted by Friday 25th July and will then be sent to a relevant member of a review panel.

The Annual Meeting itself promises to be as valuable as ever with workshops on writing grant proposals, getting your work published and learning analytical techniques adding to scientific programme covering all aspects of ecology.  As student attendance has again been subsidised by 50% and the preceding Student Session only costs £10, we hope that we've made it as affordable as possible for BES student members to attend a high quality scientific conference and participate in the Society's activities.  Bookings for the Student Session and Annual Meeting must be made by Friday 1 August.

Delegates also attending the CPB & UKPopNet Graduate Student Workshop will also be able to attend the afternoon of the Student Session which will include the ‘Speed Presentations’ and ‘CV Clinic’.
