"Does Science Matter?"

“Science, just like music, art and culture, is international.  It is fundamental to understanding the world we live in, how we respond to it and how we interact with it.  The UK has a strong science heritage and it is also an important part of our future.  Science has enabled mankind to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems through history and its role as a force for change in solving some of the world’s most urgent problems today is becoming increasingly important.  Technology and innovation are having an unprecedented impact on our daily lives in the twenty first century and the pace of change is quickening.  The health and wealth benefits flowing from science invention continue to be enormous and wide ranging. It is crucial that our science base is ready to take advantage of the global opportunities of the future and that our young people are excited by science”
